“These prints are directly influenced by my largest installation to date, Untiled, which was completed in 2021. I took a photograph of the installation and digitally manipulated it to create this monochromatic, abstracted composition. The abstracted nature of the prints adds a layer of distortion to the already disorienting experience of the original installation.

From conception to exhibition, the process of creating the installation took five years and the help of two assistants. Together, we individually placed and adhered approximately 12,000 one inch hexagon tiles to a 10-by-10 foot piece of canvas. The final result was a field of undulating floor tile—about the size of the average domestic bathroom—with which the viewer could interact. I strategically chose a plush and pliable backing to create these undulating hills and valleys, so as the viewer walked over the tiles the surface squished beneath their feet. This shifting floor structure gives the viewer a sense of physical and visual distortion, which is disorienting. This disorienting experience—looking down, seeing floor move beneath you—serves as a metaphor for body dysphoria and references my own personal experience as someone who identifies as queer and nonbinary.

The prints I have created bring a piece of this massive installation into your space in a more manageable size and weight, allowing viewers to continue to experience distortion in a new way through the simplification of the forms.”
